RLI Tennessee Chapter Advocacy

The RLI Tennessee Chapter supports the efforts of REALTORS® Land Institute in being committed to representing and increasing exposure for the issues that matter most to land professionals–both locally and nationally. We keep up members up to date with the latest news from DC on WOTUS, 1031 Like-Kind Exchange Tax Reform, Endangered Species, and more. RLI is also proud to take a stand and engage on many local issues that hit home for our members. RLI has a voice through its member-driven Government Affairs Committee, and as an RLI Tennessee Chapter Member so will you!

RLI Federal Policy Issues of Concern

RLI Builds the Case for the Value of Like Kind Exchanges
1031 like-kind exchanges, a very useful tax provision for the real estate sector, could be reformed or eliminated during the next phase of tax reform activity in Congress.  The REALTORS Land Institute and the National Association of REALTORS® oppose any reform to this provision and have been working to educate Congress about the value these exchanges bring to the real estate sector and the economy as a whole. More Information.

Use this template letter from the REALTORS® Land Institute to inform and educate your Members of Congress on why 1031 Like-kind Exchanges are integral to the efficient operation and ongoing vitality of thousands of American businesses, especially in the land real estate sector.

RLI Opposes the Final “Waters of the U.S.” Rule
The EPA’s “Waters of the U.S.” , that would expand federal jurisdiction over more U.S. water bodies, has been stayed nationwide by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.  RLI opposed this rule and is working closely with NAR to have this rule withdrawn or at least not funded in 2017.  More information.

Using Drones for Commercial Purposes is Almost a Reality
FAA has proposed regulations integrating drones into the national airspace – scheduled to be finalized late in 2016.  The regulations as proposed are a positive step forward to helping RLI members use drones in their business. More information.

RLI Looks for Broad Reform of the ESA
RLI has been working on a large suite of issues related to the Endangered Species Act, including designating critical habitat and listing the Greater Sage Grouse as endangered. RLI will be working with Congress and coalition partners to develop a strategy to reform this program that will protect endangered species while enhancing economic development. More information.
